The mission of the NEKPCI is to create a seamless system of care

for all individuals on their end of life journey, no matter where that         

journey takes place in our community. This system incorporates a

hospice-like philosophy and provides a community standard of care

for pain control, and emotional and spiritual support.

 

       Vision

NEKPCI’s vision is that all our community health care facilities

and agencies provide care for the dying in a way that eases their

suffering, promotes their choices, and provides comfort to their

loved ones.

Text Box: Introduction
This seminar will address pharmacological and non-pharmacological responses to the physical, emotional, and spiritual pain that may accompany the end of life journey. Come prepared to learn about pain management via pharmaceuticals and through the practice of music-thanatology. 

This Seminar is Appropriate for health care professionals of all disciplines and of all levels, as well as educators, social workers, clergy members, interested community persons, and anyone involved personally or professionally with the care of the seriously ill.   

About the Presenters
Dr. Zail Berry received her MD at the University of California, San Francisco where she remained for residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine. She completed a fellowship and a Master’s Degree in Public Health at George Washington University Medical Center, joining the faculty after her training. During her seven years in Washington, DC, Dr. Berry acquired extensive experience in end-of-life care as the Medical Director at the Hospice of Washington. Upon moving to VT in 1996, Dr. Berry continued this work at the Hospice of Champlain Valley while practicing internal medicine at FAHC /Aesculapius. Dr. Berry is the founding Medical Director of the FAHC Palliative Care Program. Since 2004, she has been in private practice in Palliative Medicine, providing home-based care to persons with serious illness and the homebound elderly in Chittenden County. She serves as Co-Medical Director of the Hospice of Champlain Valley and is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the UVM College of Medicine.

Linda Schneck is a Certified Music-Thanatologist. Music-thanatology is a contemplative practice with clinical applications. Originating in Colorado, and now based in Oregon, it was pioneered throughout the country over the last thirty years through the ground-breaking clinical and educational programs of the Chalice of Repose Project (www.chaliceofrepose.org). This Project now has sites throughout the US, as well as in Canada and Europe. Ms. Schneck has attended nearly two thousand vigils over the last decade in many settings - hospitals, hospices, home care settings, and long term care facilities. As a clinician, harpist, teacher, and composer, she is a Senior Harp and Clinical Faculty Member of the Chalice of Repose Project, spending part of her time in Oregon. Her article, The Temple Vision in Palliative Care, has been published in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing (2006, 2/5). Ms. Schneck resides in the Northeast Kingdom where her music-thanatology practice serves the residents and families at several area nursing facilities.

    approach taken to manage pain.
2. Name four common myths about opiate use and how patient / family 
    education about each can positively impact pain control. 
3. Identify three ways in which the prescriptive nature of music-    
    thanatology is similar to a pharmaceutical prescription.
4. Describe at least two physiological outcomes that can be measurably 
     improved through music- thanatology.
